ES. While carrying several feathers in your cap, please tell us about yourself and your role at PMMAI.?
Sunil Jain. I am a Mechanical Engineer and graduated from B.I.T.S., Pilani in 1978. With an experience of over 40 years in the plastics and packaging industry, am currently the President and Executive Director of Rajoo Engineers Limited, a global player in manufacturing plastics processing machines. Currently the Hon. Treasurer of Plastics Machinery Manufacturers Association of India and Chairman of Indian Institute of Packaging ( under Ministry of Commerce).

ES. Please tell us about PMMAI and how it is serving the plastic industry in India.
Sunil Jain. PMMAI works continuously for Indian Plastics Machinery to be World Class in terms of Quality, Technology, Cost Competitiveness and Process Standards through inclusive and cooperative approach to create value for the plastics processing industry. PMMAI endevours for Indian plastics machinery industry to be a global player providing
World Class products at competitive price to contribute to the success of the plastics processing industry to be their preferred supplier of machinery. PMMAI organises knowledge sharing seminars, workshops and study tours etc. PMMAI also organises industry show case exhibitions.
ES. The upcoming 2nd edition of PlastFocus is powered by PMMAI. Please tell us about the role and significance of PlastFocus in the industry?
Sunil Jain. This show received an overwhelming response at the new venue Yashobhoomi, Dwarka, New Delhi. Exhibitions offer a platform both for the machinery manufacturers and the processing industry. It gives an opportunity for the industry participants to comprehend latest trends and technologies.
ES. How is PMMAI collaborating with governing bodies to ensure sustainable practices?
Sunil Jain. Plastic processing machinery manufacturers are continuously innovating to maximise use of recycled plastics in the end product. Plastic recycling machines, for both factory waste and post-consumer waste are also offered by some of the members. Continous efforts are optimise plastic products to consumer less plastics in the end products without any sacrifice on its performance.
ES. The growing rate of plastic production is contributing to waste and pollution issues, it’s impacting health, and its threatening oceans and wildlife. Having said that, to what extent it is a challenge to advocate the industry and what are the primary challenges faced by the plastic industry today?
Sunil Jain. This is a totally wrong perception. Growth in plastic production and consumption is not contributing to increase in plastic but the callous manner in which it is disposed is the main issue. Let us not fall for the misinformation. The consumers need to take responsibility of disposing used plastics consciously and not to litter. When we talk about oceans, plastic nets used by the fishing industry also need to be properly disposed and not dumped in the ocean. Consumers and users need to be educated that plastic waste is also wealth if it is collected and segregated at source. Enough technologies are available for both recycling and upcycling.
ES. Please tell us about the promotional efforts that are being made to promote the positive aspects of the plastic industry?
Sunil Jain. The Governments at large are also taking initiatives in consultation with the stake-holders in terms of regulations e.g. Plastics Waste Management Rules and EPR. This would go a long way.
ES. Any message that you’d like to share with the industry?
Sunil Jain. There is no alternative to plastics, it is indeed a wonder material. Use it consciously and dispose it even more consciously.
