EWB has garnered accolades such as “World’s Leading New Exhibition and Convention Centre” and the “Middle East’s Leading Large-Scale Wedding Venue”.

Covering an extensive area of 309,000 sqm, EWB comprehensively addresses the needs of convention and exhibition organisers who choose the centre for its connectivity, accessibility, and inclusion of all essential services required. The centre features 10 expansive exhibition halls of different ceiling heights, totalling 95,000 sqm. The opening of EWB in November 2022 featured the simultaneous running of three major annual exhibitions: Jewellery Arabia, the largest jewellery exhibition in the Middle East, the first edition of the Scent Arabia exhibition, and Cityscape, one of the largest real estate events in the Middle East.

These were followed by other significant events, including the Autumn Fair, Bahrain’s largest retail fair, the Bahrain International Garden Show (BIGS), the Middle East Oil, Gas & Geosciences Show (MEOS/GEO), the Arab International Cybersecurity, the 146th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, the International Downstream Conference & Exhibition (GDA), the Arab Cyber Security Summit, among many others. ES. Sustainability is a crucial focus for many modern venues. What sustainable practices and technologies have been implemented at Exhibition World Bahrain to minimize its environmental impact and promote eco-friendly operations?

Sara Ahmed Buhiji. EWB prioritises sustainability and environmental responsibility in its operations and event management practices. From eco-friendly construction materials and energy-efficient systems to waste reduction and recycling programmes, the venue integrates sustainable practices to minimise its carbon footprint and promote responsible stewardship of resources. As part of Bahrain’s broader renewable energy goals, EWB is actively participating in the Sakhir area solar energy project. This initiative, designed to increase the share of clean energy in Bahrain’s electricity mix, will see EWB play a significant role in the country’s sustainability objectives. Moreover, the deployment of an HR automation system exemplifies EWB’s approach to streamlining operations, reducing paper usage, and enhancing efficiency.

EWB has made significant progress in reducing its carbon footprint by incorporating energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy sources. From thermally insulated construction materials that combat natural elements to state-of-the-art HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems and building management systems designed to optimise energy use. The venue’s innovative use of LED lighting, natural daylighting, and motion sensor lights further underscores its commitment to energy efficiency.

EWB has also implemented robust water conservation measures that are aligned with Bahrain’s water resource management strategy. The reuse of air conditioning condensation for irrigation, alongside the deployment of low-flow faucets and dual-flush toilets, exemplifies the venue’s approach to sustainable water use. Additionally, the presence of an indoor vertical garden not only beautifies the space but also plays a crucial role in air purification and temperature regulation.

ES. Looking ahead, what are your future plans in terms of expansion, the introduction of new features, or the hosting of upcoming major events? How do you envision the venue evolving to meet the changing needs of the MICE industry?

Sara Ahmed Buhiji. We are gearing up to host major international events for the first time in Bahrain, including the 9th edition of the prestigious UN Tourism World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism and Routes World 2024. These events will draw international delegations and provide significant opportunities for business networking in promising B2B niches across the region. EWB aims to diversify its event portfolio by targeting specialised industries, niche markets and vertical segments with dedicated exhibitions and networking events. This strategy will attract targeted audiences, foster industry innovation, and set EWB apart from its competitors.

We are adopting geo-cloning to replicate successful events in Bahrain, focusing on customer-centricity, industry agility and innovation. This approach positions us for long-term success as a premier MICE destination. We are committed to advancing our sustainability initiatives by implementing efficient energy systems, expanding renewable energy generation, enhancing water preservation, optimising waste management, and educating our stakeholders on sustainability in events. Achieving carbon neutrality is one of our key long-term goals, and we fully recognise its importance across the MICE industry worldwide. Leveraging our active memberships in key international MICE associations such as UFI, ICCA, AIPC, IAPCO, PCMA, IAEE and ASAE, EWB is well-positioned to collaborate with industry leaders. This supports our targeted outreach to attract major international exhibitions, congresses, conventions and events, ensuring EWB’s continued evolution to meet the changing needs of the MICE industry.
