The Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre in Finland is embarking on a significant upgrade to enhance its capabilities for large-scale events. The centre plans to install a new 5,000-seat grandstand system as part of a €6 million investment currently in the competitive bidding phase. This project will feature 12 movable grandstands, increasing the total seating capacity to between 6,500 and 7,500.
Expected to be operational by September 2025, the grandstands will transform halls 6 and 7 into the Messukeskus Arena, seamlessly integrating seating with exhibition spaces and state-of-the-art services. This flexible system will cater to a variety of events, including sports, entertainment, large corporate gatherings, and exhibitions. Additionally, the centre will upgrade its sound and lighting systems to support the demands of arena productions.
Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre CEO Anni Vepsäläinen noted the potential for attracting more international events to Helsinki: “Soon, we will be able to offer a representative and technologically advanced arena for even large-scale events. This will promote various types of tourism to Helsinki, which is seen in Finland as an ideal location for major international events due to its accessibility and services.”
Marcus Bergström, business director at Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre, Events & Congresses, adds: “The grandstands can be used for large corporate events, shareholder meetings, seminars, sports and gaming events, galas, shows, and congresses. Many of our current clients – such as Helsinki International Horse Show – will also benefit from the new grandstands.”
