The 29th edition of Routes World, the premier global aviation event, concluded at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre. Taking place from October 6 to 8, this year’s event marked the first time the event was hosted in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Over 2,300 delegates from 230 airlines and 530 airports worldwide gathered to discuss the future of the aviation industry and enhance global air connectivity.
Hosted by Bahrain International Airport (BIA) and managed by Bahrain Airport Company (BAC), the event was held in collaboration with the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) and the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB).
Prominent attendees at the opening ceremony included Mohamed bin Thamer AlKaabi, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications; Fatima bint Jaafar Al Sairafi, Minister of Tourism; Sara Ahmed Buhiji, CEO of BTEA; and Khalid Hussain Taqi, Chairman of Gulf Air Group (GFG).
In his welcoming address, Minister AlKaabi highlighted the significance of Routes World as a vital platform for discussions aimed at shaping the future of the global aviation sector. He noted that hosting the event in Bahrain provided participants with the opportunity to explore the Kingdom’s capabilities and strategic location, which are essential for fostering a sustainable and thriving aviation industry.
Minister Al Sairafi emphasized that the event aligned with the objectives of the Tourism Strategy 2022-2026, strengthening the connection between the tourism and aviation sectors. She expressed optimism that the conference would facilitate the exchange of expertise within the aviation industry, ultimately contributing to its growth.
“Bahrain is committed to becoming a premier destination for conferences and exhibitions,” Al Sairafi stated. “The Bahrain International Exhibition Centre, the most modern facility in the Middle East, is equipped to host world-class events and significantly enhances our tourism infrastructure.”
Mohamed Yousif AlBinfalah, CEO of BAC, remarked that hosting Routes World 2024 was a significant milestone for Bahrain’s aviation, tourism, and logistics sectors. He underscored the collaboration between government entities aimed at connecting airports, airlines, and destinations, positioning Bahrain as a leading tourism hub.
“The event showcases Bahrain’s vision for future global air connectivity,” AlBinfalah added. “With our geographical advantages and cutting-edge infrastructure, we aim to attract international carriers and travelers.”
Over the course of the event, Routes World 2024 served as a strategic platform for fostering relationships and driving growth in passenger traffic. Attendees engaged in over 9,000 scheduled meetings, including participation from representatives of 80 of the world’s top 100 airlines.
The conference featured more than 40 speakers, including keynote addresses from five airline CEOs. The opening day included insightful panel discussions focusing on the rapid growth trajectory of the Arabian Gulf region. Dr. Jeffrey Goh, CEO of GFG, contributed to a dialogue on the future of airline development, while another session explored the expanding role of technology in logistics.
The CEO of BAC discussed the importance of airfreight and cargo operations in enhancing global connectivity and operational efficiency. As Routes World 2024 came to a close, it reinforced Bahrain’s position as a distinctive tourist destination and highlighted its role in the global aviation landscape.
